A few years ago my family decided to downgrade from a house to a four room apartment. We found an apartment that met all our needs. Moving from a larger to a smaller home is always a headache as everyone knows how much junk accumulates in a house over the years. Packing can feel like a never-ending task so the best way to go about it is to focus on specific areas each day and prepare packaging materials for each item, making a goal to clear out, say, a particular cupboard or a specific part of the room. Then make sure you clear it out entirely without leaving anything behind. Everything should go into one of two categories – pack or throw. Keep saying to yourself “Everything must go!” so that you don’t leave bits behind that you have to come back for later (my younger brother often did this and it drove us crazy). My family had to move twice because the renovation process took longer than expected on our new apartment, so it was not ready by the time we had to vacate our old house. If this happens to you, you may want to label certain boxes as “essentials” so that you can make sure these boxes are accessible when you’re living in the intermediate home. Try to keep these boxes to a minimum so you have less to re-pack when you have to move to the final home. Finally moving into our new apartment was a relief.
