The kids kept telling me and their dad how much they wanted a new puppy. I figured that since the kids were getting older and they could handle the new responsibility that we could buy labradoodle puppy for them to take care of. Besides, I missed having a four legged friend in the house. A dog would keep me company while my kids were in school and if I got it the proper training then I would be able to bring it on walks with us. I know that the kids are too young to do a lot of the training but I still think that they could learn a lot by having a puppy in the house. Those dogs can take a lot of work but in the end you have a really good dog that will be a life long companion. We need to talk to the local breeder about buying one of these puppies.

There is something that most people overlook when they decide to purchase a pet. Pets like humans will get sick, and when they get sick they will need someone to take care of them. A lot of people will purchase a pet, like a dog or cat and get it just because while it is a kitten or puppy it looks nice. But they fail to think about the long-term responsibility that comes with pet ownership. I instilled this idea into my children when they told me that they wanted to get puppy. I told them that as soon as they got a puppy it would be their responsibility to see to it that it was well cared for. That included making sure that it got to the vet, and that if it needed anything it was paid for. Now obviously my wife and I would be paying for the majority of the veterinarian care for a pet, but we would also ask that our children each contribute two dollars to the cause. Recently we had to purchase some demodex mange because our dog had mange.

Like many popular breeds of dogs, the bichon frise has a very colorful history. A descendant of the Barbet or Water Spaniel, the Bichon was a favorite companion of girls and young ladies in the Mediterranean region as early as 600 to 300 BC. In latter centuries, the dog accompanied sailors during their travels and was also used for bartering.

By the 14th century, Italian seamen brought the Bichon Frise to continental Europe where it became popular among Italian nobility. It was also during this period that the characteristic lion’s mane style cut of the Bichon was developed.

The Bichon Frise reached its height of popularity during the reign of Henry III, becoming a beloved and pampered pet not only by this British monarch, but also by Napoleon Bonaparte of France and by the nobles of Spain. They have also become the favorite subjects for artworks by masters like Francisco Jose de Goya. However, with the toppling of several European monarchs, so too did interest in the Bichon wane, so that these poor dogs ended up becoming strays or as performing animals with street players or organ grinders.

Thanks to the huge success of Belgian author Herge’s “Tintin” books (which featured a loyal Bichon named Milou), the Bichon Frise was recognized as an official standard of the breed by the national kennel club of France (Societe Centrale Canine) and, much later, by the American Kennel Club.
