Proper Breathing Technique When Exercising.
Good technique when breathing is critical to prevent injuries, especially when doing oblique exercises. You need to be aware of your spinal alignment, movement speed, range of motion, and breathing. You need to set up your equipment properly and use all equipment as directed. All of these elements together represent good technique. It only takes a moment to get hurt. Even if you’re working with a spotter or with a personal trainer, you always need to take care.
You may hear the term, “Valsalva maneuver.” This refers to a technique of intentionally holding one’s breath to create pressure in the chest and abdominal cavity. This pressure prevents blood from leaving the muscles. Professional weight lifters use the Valsalva maneuver to slightly increase their strength for a competitive edge. However, it is dangerous and it is not recommended.
At the same time, too much breathing is also not good. Over breathing can cause hyperventilation. This can lead to dizziness, light-headedness, and fainting. Simply breathe naturally.
